A Brief Introduction to China Medical University (CMU) Library

This Library was founded in 1914, and is the result of the merger of the Moukden Medical College Library (1892) and the Manchurian Medical University Library(1911). At the beginning of 1990s, the Ministry of Public Health accredited the Library as the Northeastern Regional Library of the National Network for Medical Literature resource - sharing and the Medical Information Center of Literature Retrieval and Consultation for the Designing and Evaluating of Health Sciences Projects. The collection today totals about 590,000 columns of books and journals and has 5800 journals titles, 1600 of them currently received; about 1000 of these are published in foreign languages, Springer Link and other electronic database. The Library also has 3000 volumes of microfilms. Housed within the Library is one of the most important biomedical collection in China, with rare Chinese traditional medical publications dated from 1300 AD and German, English and Japanese medical journals of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Library's retrospective journal collection is particularly strong and is one of the best in China. The library and the Faculty of Medical Library and information Studies are integrated in both Leadership and operation. It is the Medical Information Center on the CMU campus, and is connected to the China Education and Research Network (CERNET), China Medical Information Network (CMINET), and the Internet. Through these domestic and international connections various electronic services can be offered to our campus community and clinicians and researchers in the region.

SERVICES

A Machine-readable Catalogue coexists with the older card catalogue. Card catalogue records are being added to the machine-readable catalogue at a rapid pace.
* The faculty and graduated reading rooms are accessible to non-CMU medical professionals with academic status equal to or higher than attending physician. These reading rooms offer open access to biomedical journals, authoritative international indexing services published within the last twenty years, and foreign books published within the last five. With the help of library staff users can have access to the journals and microfilms from the earlier years which are kept in closed stacks. Reference books in various languages are available in a separated room in this area. Reference material is available only for in-library use.
* Reading rooms for students contain current Chinese journals in the humanities and social sciences, newspapers, and Chinese medical reference books.
* Literature Searching. Computerized, CD-ROM, or online literature searches may be requested at the Information Services may be requested at the Information Service Division, most searches are conducted for users by library staff. Databases accessible on CD-ROM include MEDLINE, SCIENCE CITATION INDEX, CHINESE BIOMEDCAL DISC (CBMdisc), and Chinese Medical Current Contents (CMCC).
* Reference Guides. Guides to reference works are available for consultation at the Reference Desk.
* INTERNET access, E-mail, and WWW access are available in the Electronic Reading Room. Library staff is trained to help users find detailed medical information in a wide range of biomedical fields.
* Interlibrary Loans (ILL) The ILL office provides access to materials unavailable at CMU but required by CMU students and faculty. ILL requests received from other libraries are filled within three days of receipt. Thank to formal cooperation arrangement with McGill University in Canada, which dates from 1986, the Library has access to biomedical material not easily available in China, Shortly material will exchanged with McGill using the ARIEL/INTERNET protocols.
* Photocopying. The Library's Copy Service maintains photocopiers at the entrance of the Library.
* Library Instruction. The Library offers Workshops designed to familiarize users with the library, the functions of the internet, the style and format of English language medical papers, and to teach effective use of library materials.
